Manitoba was represented at Saskatchewan’s Provincial Indoor Junior Open (January 19-21 in Regina) by Reece Carter, Fiona Mullins, Daniel Mullins, Ben Mayes and Zihan Ling. Carter won the girls’ U18 singles title with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Anya Chavez. Fiona Mullins was a finalist in girls’ U14 singles (winning three rounds before losing to Emily Niers 6-2, 6-3) and a semifinalist in girls’ U16 singles.
In boys’ U14 singles, Daniel Mullins beat Enoch Yang 6-0, 6-1 before losing in the semifinals 6-2, 6-3 to Rylan Hastings, while Mayes edged Nicholas Pesenti 4-6, 6-0, 10-3 before falling in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-3 to Dmitry Kulakov. Mayes was a consolation finalist in boys’ U16 singles. Ling reached the consolation final in girls’ U12 singles and the consolation semifinals in girls’ U14 singles.
