Marcello Audino and Elinor Shpunt each won two singles titles at the Kildonan Junior Open, held May 13-15 at Kildonan Tennis Club. Audino won the boys’ U16 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Owen Dunn after beating Shawn Sophasath of Portage la Prairie 6-4, 6-0 in the boys’ U18 final. Shpunt went 2-0 to win the girls’ U12 round-robin and defeated Monica Popovic in a walkover to capture the girls’ U16.
Keegan Rice won the boys’ U12 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Daniel Mullins, Owen Dunn beat Dmitry Kulakov 6-1, 6-1 in the boys’ U14 singles final, and Ella Arksey claimed the Tier 2 co-ed U14 singles by beating Austin Lin 1-6, 6-4, 10-4. The first place teams in doubles round-robin play were Dmitry Kulakov/Austin Lin (U14) and Elinor Shpunt/Shawn Sophasath (U18).
A total of 28 players took part in the tournament, including seven players from outside of Manitoba: Keegan Rice, Austin Lin, Harry Lin and Danael Liew from Saskatchewan, Owen Dunn and Dmitry Kulakov from Ontario, and Jack Leckert from Germany.
