The ITF will be making enhancements to the ITF World Tennis Number (WTN) calculation. The changes that are being made are based on feedback from players, coaches and member nations, as well as using the increased data that the ITF is receiving. The ITF has tested these changes, and they have seen a positive impact on the algorithm performance.

The enhancement to the WTN algorithm will reposition cohorts of players on the current scale of 40-1, particularly with regard to different age groups.

While a player’s number is likely to be adjusted, movement relative to their peers in their own age groups should be similar if they play regularly. The key changes to the algorithm include: an adjustment of initial ratings on the WTN scale, a faster transition to ‘true’ skill level, and a smaller rating change when losing to a superior player.

The change in the WTN algorithm calculation will be in effect starting on Wednesday September 11th, 2024.
