Reece Carter of Manitoba came within a point of beating top seed and eventual champion Annabelle Xu of Quebec at the U12 Outdoor Rogers Junior Nationals (August 23-29 in Mont Tremblant, Quebec). Xu saved three match points in her three-hour Championship Flight quarterfinal match against Carter to win 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-4. A round earlier, Carter played for three and half hours in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Danielle Tuhten of BC.
In the 5/8 playoff, Carter earned wins over Alberta’s Martyna Ostrzygalo and Ontario’s Sarah Liu to finish fifth in singles competition. Carter teamed up with Mia Kupres of Alberta to reach the girls’ U12 doubles final before losing 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 to the Ontario pair of Jessica Alsola/Dharani Niroshan.
