Marcello Audino captured a pair of titles at Saskatchewan’s Provincial Indoor Junior Open, held January 27-29 in Regina. Audino beat fellow Manitoban Stefan Barre 6-0, 6-1 to win the boys’ U16 singles event. In the boys’ U14 singles final, Audino beat Saskatchewan’s Keegan Rice 6-0, 6-1. Barre won the consolation event in boys’ U14 singles with an 8-4 victory over Van Nguyen of Saskatchewan. (Above photo: Barre at left and Audino are presented with U16 trophies).

In girls’ U18 singles, Reece Carter beat fellow Manitoban Ana Clara Gusmini 6-1, 6-0 and then beat Anya Chavez of Saskatchewan 6-0, 6-3 before losing the final to Saskatchewan’s Morgan Waller 6-3, 6-4. Gusmini lost the consolation final in girls’ U18 singles 8-3 to Shiah Holmes of Saskatchewan.

Also representing Manitoba at the tournament were Monika Popovic and Shawn Sophasath. Popovic earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Saskatchewan’s Adlgessa Yowin in girls’ U16 singles and a 6-0, 6-1 win over Holmes in girls’ U18 singles before losing to Waller in the semifinals of both categories. Sophasath dropped both of his matches in the boys’ U18 singles round-robin to Saskatchewan players Conrad Koch and Payton Nicol.
