Reece Carter advanced to the Championship Flight in singles play at both the U12 and U14 Indoor Rogers Junior Nationals. Here’s a summary of how Manitoba players fared at the junior national competitions held in March-April:

At the U12 Indoor Rogers Junior Nationals in Calgary, Reece Carter went 3-0 in her round-robin group before losing in the first round of the Championship Flight to Ontario’s Kayla Cross 7-6(3), 7-5: Carter saved six match points before Cross eventually prevailed. Carter and partner Mia Kupres of Alberta reached the semifinals of the doubles draw.

Also representing Manitoba in Calgary were Ryan Carter and Daniel Derksen. Ryan Carter was beaten in the first round of the U12 girls’ Flight #3 singles by Quebec’s Amelie Allard 6-0, 6-2. Derksen beat Ontario’s Spencer Keung in a walkover to set up a Fight #3 U12 boys’ singles semifinal match against Nemanja Stefanovic in which Stefanovic won 6-0, 6-0.

At the U14 Indoor Rogers Junior Nationals in Vancouver, Reece Carter went 3-1 in her round-robin group, while fellow Manitobans Marcello Audino and Maya Arsey both went 1-3. Carter lost to Sarah-Moude Fortin of Quebec 7-5, 6-0 in the Championship Flight before rebounding to beat Quebec’s Gabrielle Geolier in the consolation 6-3, 6-2. Carter was then beaten by Dasha Plekhanova of Ontario and former Manitoban Sabrina Alano of B.C in the Championship Flight consolation, placing 12th in Canada in the U14 category at the age of 11.

At the U16 Indoor Rogers Junior Nationals in Montreal, Shawn Sophasath of Manitoba dropped his opening match to Alberta’s Oscar Yang 6-0, 6-2. Sophasath was then beaten by Peter Kuszynski of Ontario 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation round. In the U16 girls’ singles, Arksey lost 6-4, 6-0 to Karin Hamilton of Ontario before being eliminated by Love-Star Alexis of Quebec 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation.
