James Bernus and Jason Betker are no strangers to representing Manitoba at the National Wheelchair Tennis Championships. This year’s event, which was held in Montreal, was Bernus’ fifth trip to nationals and Betker’s fourth.

Their experience showed at last week’s nationals, as both local players impressed and picked up a couple wins against the best competition in the country. Bernus finished the singles competition with a 3-3 record and Betker was close behind with a 2-4 mark. The duo also teamed up in doubles action, but lost to Gary Luker and Robert Shaw in straight sets.

The tournament was held at IGA Stadium from Oct. 31-Nov. 3. Overall, Bernus was a big fan of how the event went.

“Of all the cities Nationals were held, the event in Montreal was the best organized,” Bernus said. “The venue was top notch, transportation of athletes ran smoothly and the scheduling of games were spaced out perfectly. It was my best experience at Nationals results-wise and I look forward to Montreal hosting the event next year.”

Betker was also impressed and plans to return next year.

“Great people, great venue and excellent tennis was played,” Betker said. “I felt I had too many unforced errors and know what part of my game I need to work on. Overall it was a good experience and look forward to going back next year. ”
